Dr. Kris Palmer has been teaching intermediate and advanced flutists for over 30 years. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Flute Performance from Rice University, she is the director of the San Jose Youth Symphony Flute Choirs, and she is on the faculty of the Summer Flute Institute at San Jose State University.

Dr. Palmer has conducted masterclasses and lectures at Wichita State University, San Jose State University, Chabot College, Skyline College, the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, the MTAC State Convention, the San Francisco Flute Festival, and the San Diego Flute Festival. She is the published author of Ornamentation According to CPE Bach and JJ Quantz as well as multiple journal articles in the MTAC California Music Teacher magazine.

Dr. Palmer’s students have won awards from the San Jose Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, the Bay Area Music Association Competition, the Junior Bach Festival, the U.S. International Music Competition, and the MTAC VOCE Competition.

Dr. Palmer’s own career as a performer includes First Prize in the Carmel Chamber Music Competition, Second Prize in the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition, a Carnegie Hall Recital Debut with Artists International, and chamber music grants from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music and the Zellerbach Foundation. She holds the position of Principal Piccolo with the Golden Gate Park Band, she performs as Second Flutist with Lamplighters Musical Theatre, and she is the founder and director of Black Cedar Chamber Music. She performs regularly with Opera San Jose, Santa Cruz Symphony, California Symphony, Monterey Symphony, and Santa Cruz Ballet.

Private flute lessons with Dr. Palmer address flute techniques, music theory, flute solo repertoire, and woodwind chamber music repertoire. All students are expected to participate in Music Village’s monthly Open Mic Live Shows. All students are encouraged to participate in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program. Advanced students are encouraged to participate in solo competitions, as well as auditions for youth orchestras and CBDA All-State Honors Ensembles.
